What should I wear for a corporate headshot?

Solid, neutral and well fitting. Navy, charcoal, white, black and mid-grey photograph cleanly and don’t fight your face for attention.

Avoid: - Busy patterns, fine checks and bold stripes (they can shimmer on camera) - Large logos and graphic prints - Very bright colours, which can cast colour onto your skin - Anything you haven’t sat down in recently, because a jacket that looks fine standing can bunch awkwardly seated

Do: - Bring two outfit options. Sometimes the one you liked at home looks different under studio light. - Keep jewellery simple. - Glasses are fine. If the lenses catch glare, the photographer can adjust the angle of the light or your chin. - Iron or steam everything. Wrinkles are easier to prevent than to retouch.

Formal attire is the default for most corporate uses, but “formal” depends on your industry. A lawyer and a start-up founder are not dressing for the same photo. If you aren’t sure, ask the studio for a brief. We send one when you book.

How to prepare in the days before

• Get a haircut or grooming 2 to 3 days before, not the morning of. A fresh cut often needs a couple of days to settle.

• Sleep. One or two decent nights before makes a visible difference around the eyes, and no retouching fully fixes tired.

• Drink water, skip anything that makes you puffy.

• Decide where the photo is going. LinkedIn, the company website, an annual report and a conference speaker page all want slightly different framing. Tell the photographer.

How long does a headshot session take?

At our studio:

• Individual session: about 30 to 45 minutes, which includes setup, direction and shooting.

• Team session: 5 to 10 minutes per person, in a scheduled slot.

• Full-day on-location shoot: around 40 to 50 people.

Why 30 minutes for one portrait? Because the first ten are always the stiffest. Almost everyone relaxes after a handful of frames, and the usable ones tend to come in the second half. Rushing that warm-up is the most common reason people dislike their headshots.

What actually happens in the session

1. Backdrop and light are set (white, light grey and dark are the common choices).

2. The photographer positions you: chin slightly forward and down, shoulders angled a little to the camera, which is more flattering than squaring up.

3. Shooting begins, and images are reviewed on a tethered monitor during the session, so you can see them and say “that one” or “the smile felt forced” while there’s still time to fix it.

4. You pick the images to retouch.

5. Editing covers skin tone accuracy, sharpness and background consistency, without erasing real features. If you don’t look like your photo when you walk into the interview, the photo has failed.

Studio or your office?

A studio suits individuals and small groups of roughly 5 to 6 people, because the lighting stays fixed and there’s no setup time to pay for.

An on-location shoot suits teams of about 10 or more. We bring portable lighting and a backdrop to your office, and people come in one at a time during their slot, so work isn’t disrupted. The big advantage for a company is consistency: same backdrop, same lighting, same framing, across everyone. Mismatched phone photos across a team page quietly signal a company that doesn’t sweat the details.
